Drawings of Coworkers Part 2 - Munyong

Here's the man named Munyong.

Here we go. Let's have a look at some caricature attempts on my part. Let's see...........We've got a whole bunch to pick through, but much much of it isn't worth looking at so we'll skip most of those, but........let's see.......First we have..............Ah. Munyong on a horse.
Here he is. You'll notice he's got a little drink in his hand. You'll see soon that that's a recurring theme. I always imagine that Munyong is a horrible drunk which couldn't be further from fiction. Munyong is a fantastic caricature artist and he's also very hardworking and dependable.

But one time he made and off-hand remark about my wife so I did this drawing.

And that's Munyong on the left there, posing as the fetching female in a couple caricature demo. The guy on the right is just made up.

Ok. This one may be a likeness fail. I just wanted to show Munyong as a rough-around-the-edges Korean guy. That's some soju in Munyong's arm. Soju is Munyong's favorite "mature beverage." That book he has is a Korean Traditional Book which every man is suppose to read. It's called Sam Gook Ji. The tatoo on his arm is a Korean swear word which basically means a thoughtless baby animal. "Cheesan Sehkee" But this is a bad likeness. Oh boy.

I'm not crazy about this one. I cheaped out with the closed eyes and. Ah. I don't know. This approach is maybe a little done, as it were.

 Sometimes Munyong looks like this.

Oh boy. I don't know.

I feel this to be the strongest likeness. I made this for Munyong to hang up in his kitchen where he drinks his Soju.

And that's it folks. Come back soon. I'll post up some more coworkers. It's probably gonna be JeeHae next. She's known to have an incredible face. So be ready!

Drawings of Coworkers Part 1 - Jin

This is Jin. She's the youngest employee we have working with us here. She has a very interesting face. Big teeth; puffy eyes. Good stuff.

This is one of my favorites of the batch. I think it's also the earliest out of these. Good use of the soap head approach. It feels like her to me.

I like this one pretty good too, but not as much as the first one. It feels like her mouth and her eyes but from different expressions. I think it's really important to have the whole face pointing to a specific expression now. That was something I wasn't sure about the first few years of drawing caricatures, but now I'm almost a hundred percent sure that's the way to go. Even if the eyes from one expression are the very most unique thing and the mouth from a different expression is the second most unique thing. I think it's best to sacrifice it for the expression. At least that's where my mind is at now. I guess this drawing is good evidence of what not to do then. But I don't think it's an awful caricature. It's most definitely a sellable park sketch in terms of likeness. And sometimes in the park you just gotta jump on the unique thing. Especially if its a squirmy child or something.

Design-wise this is my favorite, but if design doesn't have anything to do with function, which in this case would be likeness, who needs it? But that's a strange little issue because a caricature with strong design elements might help someone make the jump to seeing a likness when they might not otherwise make that jump..so..BUT also strong design might lead others to avoid seeing a likeness like maybe if they feel like they're being duped or something. So I don't know. The jury's still out. It feels cool to me. I see a nice design, but the likeness comes and goes, but today a coworker with a picky eye told me it looks like her.

And that same coworker was asking me about what I was thinking with the face shape on this one. I guess she didn't see it. She said she liked the idea though. Jin's face is kinda round but it's not super round compared to some other Koreans. And everybody's face is a little bit round if you squint your eyes and wanna see round, even my face. And I'm a box face all day long.  In conclusion I'm happy with the above drawing.

This is an earlier take off the same idea. Not too good, but I like the design and I like the hands. Her hair on the right side of her head looks like a devil beard. That was unintentional. Actually, the beard kinda makes it better.

I'm very pleased with the likeness on this one even though it's very lame.

These next two are failures. I'm not sure what to say. She looks like my friend munyoung who is a man. Maybe I'll post caricatures of Munyoung up next. Yeah. This one's just lacking.. something. It's.. I don't know, but I don't like it much.

Why am I posting these if I don't like them? I don't know. Maybe it inerests people. Actually, I kind of like some things about this one. Mostly its crappiness. Color could do a lot for this one. That thing in her hand is a princess's ceptor. What does a ceptor do, exactly? It helps people accept her.

Here's one more I did a few days ago. I'm mostly happy with the simplicity and that little nose swirl. And the hat and that's about it. basicness.

Some More Live Caricatures Then

I got a photo of the actual people too, but she's all covering up her face so I didn't post it. Korean girls ALWAYS hide their face. I even compelled her not to, but she still did. Alright I'll put the photo up anyway. Here it is.

Lady, your not taking a fashion photo. This is spose to be for my friends to inspect your face and judge my skillz. Anyway, no hard feelings.

These were some really great Japanese girls. That girl on the right--her face was...incredible. My drawing didn't end up fully encapsulating my feelings about it. Oh. Sorry about the blurry. I have a big crispy version here.

 crispy

Oh. And I should add that the girls are reversed.

I caught him sticking out his tongue so I was forced to assume that he sticks his tongue out a lot and it's an important part of his character. Same with the girl scratching her eyelid. I'm put in this position. I only have so much time. She had sparklies on her fingernails, and my limitations forced me to draw simple black dots which could be dirt or even boogers. But I'm given the benefit of that doubt, and for this I am grateful.

He did a brief whistle mouth which I drew here as you can see, but then, when he went to pose for a photo with the caricature after it was finished, he stuck his tongue out, and I was thinking, why is he sticking his tongue out? And I just thought he was being silly but when they went to take another photo with their camera he stuck his tongue out again, and now looking at the caricature, I'm certain, It reads to him that his tongue is sticking out even though that wasn't my intention, but if it came right down to it. Like say, for instance, if he didn't have a tongue, he would have to make sense of the drawing a different way and would see the whistle mouth..if not a cartoon eyeball. "Why am I eating a cartoon eyeball?!" REJECT. just kidding. next

This is a Korean caricature artist named Jin. She's got a bizarre and interesting face. This drawing is a little lack luster. I took a photo though, so here it is. I wanna post more coworker drawings up here with reference of them. That'll be my next post. How bout that. I think I'm talking too much though. When we artists talk about drawing we support the linguocracy but I guess I just gotta stay poetic about it. Thanks for coming to my blog.
