Caricatures at La Jolla

Me, myself, and Aida, and Markus and Natekap went and drew caricatures in La Jolla, right there around the area where we usually go to paint at the beach. Here are some happy lil customers.

If you look at the girl in the photo up close, she looks really evil for real...like scary evil. But anyway, this was the best reaction I've had...I think...ever. There was that laughing where you can't catch your breath. I saw tears. It was quite a scene. I can't take all the credit. These were awesome people and it seemed the situation was just right. There was the right amount of nervousness and, within the family, there was a really good rapport between the people. When they saw the drawing there was such an eruption and it really made my day, maybe even my week.

This one turned out alright. It was one I was so so about from the get go, but I just kept muscling through and trying to save it, and I'm glad I didn't give in to the temptation to finnish it all quick and crappy cuz it turned out ok.

Residents of the Maryland Building

There's a place in America called Ohio, there's a place in Ohio called Sandusky, and in this place called Sandusky, there's a building called the Maryland building. Kaman's Art Shoppes houses some of its Cedar Point employees here and also large spiders. Most of these employees are artists of some kind. I went to visit my old stopping grounds and couldn't have been more warmly received. What a fine time we all had.

Beautiful Ohio

I'm going to be drawing caricatures tonight at Coffee Amici in Findlay Ohio. They mentioned this on their website, but they said it in a funny way. link.

I went up to Sandusky to visit some friends and we had a little sketch party. Here's a couple drawings I did there.

Here's Your Sign

This is a sign I made. It's 20 by 30 on foam core. I put up this sign at Bellmont Park and now I no longer work there. I was averaging about 20 bucks a day. I thought I would make more money and get to draw more if I put up this sign instead of our prices sign. Well, it worked like a charm. I was drawing non-stop, and got customers before the sign was even finished. In a four hour span I made approximately as much as my best day at Bellmont which was a six hour span. So there you have it. I knew there may be some ramifications, but I was doing it on the level and everything. The thing is, at Bellmont we got set prices, BUT, first of all we can wheel and deal, and second of all its all on the honor system. My plan, which I did follow through with was to give the park their 30 percent cut of all the tips I brought in and give my boss lady her 20 percent cut. Also I sold 5 tubes legitimately so the appropriate percents were separated out accordingly as usual. I got canned though, went out with a bang, did some drawings, invoked laughter and happiness.
So then I made one more sign, which is the bottom sign which I will call "familia excelente." Me and my friends, Marcus and Eric went to Balboa Park and sat there with our signs and we each walked out with approximately 40 bucks in a span of four hours. How do you like that?! First time out there, and it was a Monday; 4o bucks. It was so much fun. I'm sure we'll do it again soon.

This is my mom. She's lovely. Hi, Mom. By the way, everybody, I'm going to be drawing retail caricatures regularly again at a place in San Diego called Belmont Park. It's right by the roller coaster in Mission Beach. I just bought a whole bunch of brand new color sticks, and I'm rarin' to go. I hope to have lots of juicy pictures to post soon.

Your lesson for today

Just cuz one drawing looks more like a human than another drawing doesn't mean it has a better likeness. This is an obvious truth to a caricature artist. When we are very young and learning to draw we will attempt a likeness, but if we fall short, we take consolation if the drawing is recognized as being of a person, but now, as caricature artists, we find the system completely reversed. I think the ultimate ideal caricature is one where no semblance of humanness remains, but still the likeness is there. This is not that drawing, but it is a drawing I am very happy with. It is of my friend, Eric Goodwin. He recently moved to San Diego. Wazup, Eric.

It is quite possible to copy a photo of a person as directly as you can and not get a good likeness. This drawing of Dave Chappelle illustrates this. It's not to say that a portrait is less prone to capturing likeness, but for a likeness to be caught it requires the same amount of attention that a caricature requires. It demands the sensitivity of a cautious and judgmental eye.
