Fresh Markus and Colorsticks
This is a talented young fellow who's going to be drawing at the San Diego Zoo. Check out his stuff. His name is Marcus.
This is my mom. She's lovely. Hi, Mom. By the way, everybody, I'm going to be drawing retail caricatures regularly again at a place in San Diego called Belmont Park. It's right by the roller coaster in Mission Beach. I just bought a whole bunch of brand new color sticks, and I'm rarin' to go. I hope to have lots of juicy pictures to post soon.

Your lesson for today
Just cuz one drawing looks more like a human than another drawing doesn't mean it has a better likeness. This is an obvious truth to a caricature artist. When we are very young and learning to draw we will attempt a likeness, but if we fall short, we take consolation if the drawing is recognized as being of a person, but now, as caricature artists, we find the system completely reversed. I think the ultimate ideal caricature is one where no semblance of humanness remains, but still the likeness is there. This is not that drawing, but it is a drawing I am very happy with. It is of my friend, Eric Goodwin. He recently moved to San Diego. Wazup, Eric.
It is quite possible to copy a photo of a person as directly as you can and not get a good likeness. This drawing of Dave Chappelle illustrates this. It's not to say that a portrait is less prone to capturing likeness, but for a likeness to be caught it requires the same amount of attention that a caricature requires. It demands the sensitivity of a cautious and judgmental eye.

Commission and Bird
I was commissioned to do this piece. It's for a Father's Day gift for the guy with the big nose. They were very specific about all the specifics. They had photos of the guns they wanted to be shooting, and Jack Bauer was to be shooting the same sort of gun the dad was shooting. So they had photos of the guns from the side, so I guess they actually own these semiautomatic weapons or, you know they might be automatic. I'm not sure, but I went ahead and gave him a big nose just the same. What else, what else? Oh yes, they were all to be shooting in the same direction with an explosion going off in a different place from where they were shooting; they wanted a 24 clock counting down somewhere; they were all to be wearing CTU gear; and the baby's CTU letters were to be in pink. I was a little puzzled about this because in all the reference of CTU gear I saw, I didn't see any letters, so I just kind of wrote CTU in pink. Problem solved. And here's a clever thing I did. Feel free to use this. The time on the 24 clock is actually the date of Father's Day this year. That's right. Gotta make a copy of that one for Grandma. Oh, and one more point of interest. The baby is a girl.

Tilda
This is a painting of an actress named Tilda Swinton which I made for the Caricaturama Showdown on Facebook. I didn't win. I think I put too much space between her nose and her mouth for one. But that's okay, cuz it felt good to paint and I am happy with many things about this.
This is an extra stupid flipbook
