The Merry Month of May

If anybody can remember back a ways, I told you guys I was gonna post a special project in March. Then, if you'll recall, I pushed it back to May. Well, guess what. I got something very splendid planned for the merry old month of May, indeed! It's not what I was gonna do, but I think it will be just as cool if not almost as cool. You know on youtube when you do a search, and you hit that first letter and a list of things comes up, then you hit that second letter and the list is narrowed down, and as you type it gets closer and closer to what you're actually looking for. If your search is going to be "Square One PBS," it's not till you get to the last letters that the list becomes limited to those words alone, whereas, if you're typing in "Beyonce" its the first thing that pops up there, right at the first B. Sooo, what I'm gonna do is go through the WHOLE alphabet, painting the first thing that pops up on that youtube search, thereby making pictures of things that the widest most general internet audience cares about. I haven't went through all the letters yet, I just checked A, B, and C. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Beyonce beat out Barack and Akon beat out Angry Beavers. I think this is gonna be neat, at least for me, and that's all I ask.

gig, one lil photo

Yeah. It feels kinda routine. I'm happy with a couple little deviations. I like the way the nose and lip fit together on the bottom kid and I like the lack of ear detail and some of the line work stuff. And the top kids hair came out okay I think.

Sketch Infectus

Art class in elementary school is all about crafts and stupid stuff. When you've got raw ambition and curiosity coming out of your bullcut; hunched over your child proof desk in the corner furiously into drawing ninja turtles and eating paste, the teacher's into making hand turkeys and Popsicle stick pinwheels.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, heroes in a half-shell, turtle power

And then comes middle school and you say to yourself, "finally I'll get to have a real art class with a real instructor who understands correct ninja turtle anatomy." But its not to be. Your teacher wants you to draw eggs and make collages from National Geographics. You keep at more important persuits in your less important classes, though, and discover through experience that it ain't about ninja turtles no more, but if you can make the grim reaper with a nine millie you can gain the favor of your rough-neck peers. So, the grim reaper you draw, and the rough-necks you befriend. Through trial and error you learn what the human skull looks like and how to spell out gang names with your fingers.

Finally high school! You're gonna get to use OIL paint, maybe. Oh, and charcoal! What possibilities! This is when the teacher informs you that you've been drawing what you think you see, but you got it all wrong. You can't be making things up like this. Sometimes she makes you draw photos upside down and sometimes you aren't aloud to look at the paper at all, only the gourds and bottles and conch shells set before you.
"What a fine kettle of fish this is!" you say to yourself in an old man's voice turning the crank on your phonograph player. You buy into the Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain propaganda as well you should, because it's true. The problem many amature artists have is they think they know what somethin looks like, but it don't look quite like that, and they're just pulling a symbol out of their head, like one does with letters and numbers, and embellishing upon it.

And mean while, teacher's flashin slides of Jackson Pollack, Mark Rothko, and Georgia O'Keef, talkin about, art means drawing and painting what you feel. And you're thinking, "I'm feelin some Ninja turtles right about now."

Eventually, however, you come under the impression that art is a very complex and interesting thing and the journey begins. Finding a new artist or grasping a new idea can drive you for months. The baffling question of what is art becomes a beautiful and intricate manifestation of the complexity of life itself. Or something like that.

And then artschool perhaps. And perhaps you forget that you use to draw to entertain yourself. Perhaps it becomes a chore and a burden. Or perhaps you're Joe Bluhm and your mind processes everything you see in a way where it can be translated to paper. Your right brain picks it up maybe. Maybe your left brain makes sense of it, maybe. Maybe your blood courses with the things that once drove mankind to bring this unruley creation under his submission. Maybe your arm is possessed by Norman Rockwell and your eye by DaVinci. Perhaps you'll show caricaturists all over the world, young and old how it can be done.

The cartoonist use to be looked on as a rare wizard of a human being. Illustration use to be eye catching and mind blowing. Artists use to be a special people who could draw what they see and then some, but the times are indeed different now and I'm not knocking them, but when the smoke clears there will still be a place for the drawer. Right now, the world is saying "how low can we go? Are kids gonna tune in to see cartoons put together by a popular vote and and drawn by the bosses nephew? Can a photograph catch the eye better than a painting?" Meanwhile we will look at our world and we will draw it tenaciously, and no one is seeing things more objectively and rendering them more poingniently than Joe.

I just got his book, Sketch Infectus, and its awesome. Its just amazing drawing after amazing drawing after amazing drawing. There's quotes at the bottom of each page if you don't know what this sketching stuff is all about. You get to hear from some big names in the illustration world and me a couple times, but its really all about those drawings. Sketch Infectus shows us where the bar has been set. I say, lets jump it. Let's one-up that cocky so-and-so, right?

Drawin at Coffee Amici in Findlay Ohio was fun

A whole bunch of people got drawn and I made pretty good in tips. Here's one of a guy from my brother's band which is called "The Sons of Adam."

They put up a bunch of photos of the caricatures I've drawn there right here on their site. Check um out. Also. April 13th, National Beast Head Day. Jack Faces, everybody.

Post Raisin Bran

snuff sned

This is drawn from a wee little photo in Entertainment Weekly, and then Nate gave me some advice and I did this one which I had more fun with.

I think the likeness is pretty decent on this one, but I'd do his nostrils a little different if I were to draw it again. I got him breathin too easy.

To any of you in the North Western Ohio area, I'm going to be drawing caricatures at a wonderful coffee shop called Coffee Amici in Findlay. It'll be on open mic night, Friday, April 3rd. So, that's a week from today. Stop by. Get drawn, and enjoy a wide range of music genres and talent levels. The address is 328 South Main st, Findlay OH, 45840.

My Lil Gallery

I am very sorry to regret that my painting experiment is not complete by the beginning of March. I knew that was wishful thinking. I'm aiming for May now. Don't hold your breath or you will die. Here's what I got for ya today though.

Painting of a Cartoon

This is a painting I did of a cartoon I made that's on my blog way back there somewhere. This took quite a while, but it's worth it because it's beautiful.

A tiny meeting point between caricature and cartooning

Hirschfeld of course
And Ronald Searle

I just thought the similarity of expression was interesting for some reason. It's not uncanny, but it's interesting to me— seeing a little overlap between two artists at the top of their respective fields.

It's All About March/Here's Some Decent Folks

Welp, I still don't have Photoshop, but I did figure out how to adjust photos in iphoto, so I guess I got no excuses. I'm gonna start posting more frequently now, scouts honor. All through the month of March, I plan on posting a cool painting experiment thing I'm excited about, so there you go.
Here's a park sketch. These were ideal customers. Say what you will about prejudging people, but can't you just tell some people are gonna be decent folks just by lookin at um? Can't you?!

...What with the economy and all...

Um, I'm confused. Why does the media keep hyping up the recession, because the more they make people nervous the worse it is for the economy. My goodness it's not funny. It's really bad. It's like a self fulfilling prophecy. Somebody needs to say, everybody keep spending and work extra hard, America. The only thing to fear is fear itself. That's absolutely true. When somebody warns somebody about something, the point isn't to be right and say "I told you so." The point is to prevent the thing from occurring, and that ain't the way it works when it comes to forecasting the economy. You tell everybody, "be careful. the economy's gonna go downhill," and what's gonna happen? I'm not sure how the media can benefit from a recession, but maybe everybody will be at home watching tv instead of working, but then advertisers might not pay as much cuz the demographics don't got the same kind of cash as before, so I don't know. I guess the answer for us little people is to stay optimistic and not talk the economy down any further and work twice as hard. Come on America! We're tough.

Here. I just invented a new cartoon character for the twenty first century. I think I'm gonna call him Bugs Bunny. Whataya think?

No More Free Internet. Fooey!

Apologies to my faithful and occasional visitors. I don't have Internet anymore, so right now I'm sending this as I sit typing in a coffee shop. Our oh so generous neighbor has moved so if we want an Internet connection now we have to pay for it, and I don't wanna. I'll try to keep updating lots, but another hitch has interrupted my endeavour and that is Photoshop says my time is up for my trial period. I'll see what I can do about that.

Until then yall are gonna have to go back to reading books and watching television.

Tea N More

This is a place I go to sometimes called Tea N More. Actually it's always called Tea N More, come to think of it. That was a little joke, but Tea N More's no joke. It's a spot where the kids come to socialize and play cards or board games.
Tea N More has lots of fun and tasty beverages. My favorite is the milk tea -- and when I say "fun," I mean they can put boba in anything you get. This is basically jumbo size tapioca balls. Sounds weird, but it's not. It's fun, like I said already. You drink a boba drink with a big fat straw so that the boba can slide through with the greatest of ease.
There're lots of tea shops out here in California like this. I think its a Korean thing. Oh yeah. They also have food at Tea N More. That's the "More" part. I'm not big on the food. I had it a couple times and I definitely prefer Chinese, but maybe this is better for you. I don't know.

This here is my good buddy, Watana. He teaches at the Art Institute and comes to Tea and More to draw too, sometimes. He's very good, and you all ought to have a look at his blog if you haven't yet. That's about all I got to say for now. Y'all have a good day, and drive safe.

Book book book

Hello internet friends. I grew a beard, and it was a book! Just kidding, but I did make a book. This is the second printing of "You Don't Want Me. I'm Trouble." It's new and improved with more cartoons and a sturdy binding. The best part of all is that you don't have to send me money in the mail or promise to pay me later like the old fashioned way. Just click on some buttons, and do the paypal thing, and it comes right to ya. So, unless you can convince your grand dad to grow it out of his pores, hop on over to Launch Syndicate and buy my book. It's really good. But wait, that's not all! For a limited time, just say, Launch Syndicate makes Art Squared look like the lunch lady's medicated skin pad, and we'll throw in a free bookmark!

Victory!

If there is anyone out there who still doubts that San Diego Beastheads jack faces and beast it, who still wonders if the dream of the founding father is alive in our time, who still questions the skill of the Sea World caricature staff, tonight is your answer.

It's an answer told by Brian Oakes taking the Bronze Nosey, by Andy winning Outstanding Cartoon Style and Retail and somethin' else, by Nate Kapnicky getting the Best Exaggerated Style award with the most twisted, craziest stuff the NCN has ever seen, but most importantly by Sea World guests laughing, many for the first time in their lives, because they got a caricature, believing that this artist must be different, and his keen observation and imagination could be that difference.

It is an answer spoken by fat and thin, tall and short, young and old, Japanese, British, Mexican, Irish, cute and nasty-lookin. Artists who sent a message to the NCN board members that we have never been just a bunch of hacks who wanted to work in California or a collection of wannabe animators and wannabe illustrators.

We are, and always will be, the United Beastheads of San Diego, of America!

Check Out Sebastian Kruger's Blog

I'm gonna have to tell everybody to go check out Kruger's blog because he's doing a series of portraits of blues musicians and it's pretty astonishing.

Barack Obama!
