So many turtles. Where to begin? How bout a flying turtle?

The face has been omitted to protect my fragile ego. I was happy with the turtle though. I usually begin a turtle with a lot of action in mind and sometimes it comes out looking like some action and sometimes it doesn't. I like the action on this one and I like the big shoes.

Here's a turtle singing happy birthday in a breezy field, making some wind of his own.

This is a happy, retardle looking turtle.

My second rainy day turtle, I'm happy with the catharsis. The catharsis came out good. At first I was unsure about the catharsis. So, I kept coloring it in, and now it's good. The catharsis is good.

I was trying to make the turtle look like her boyfriend, but it ended up looking like Nate.

This was actually a near-reject. I saw them discussing it far off, and they seemed to be thinking about rejecting it, but I bet the turtle saved this one. Look at him. He's a little super hero, he is.

I didn't get a fantastic reaction from this one, but on the bright side, we put the first turtle on the moon. Or did we?

I drew a guy sleeping on the subway. First he was very drunk and couldn't sit up and he was swooping around a lot, and I think he threw up just one tiny little drop on his pant leg. And then, he layed down and I drew him as fast as I could before my stop came.
And then, I folded up the drawing and tucked it into his arms. And Eric was with me and he took the photo. Waz up, Eric!

First, I had drawn Nate and Oakes and then, when I was on Singleton, I was drawing his eyes, and then I messed up a little and it kept getting worse and worse, and then I was like, I bet I can save this with some sunglasses, and I think it really worked out. He's definitely a sunglasses kind of guy.

And Zitman. What about Zitman? Zitman's cool too. Why don't I draw him? This is me and him and Oakes and there's Chris Chua as the sun!

This is a drawing I did of an artist named Soojin. She is very fun to work with and I've learned a lot of Korean from her and she's great at talking to my customers for me. I get the feeling she's saying good things. It always helps for avoiding rejects and such. One word she taught me was "Hajeema," which means "cut it out" essentially. Its fun to say, but we guys aren't pose to say it too much cuz I think it's kind of a girly phrase.

This is a caricature I did of us American artists in Korea. "Pa Jee" means "pants." Me and Eric went on a journey to the mall so that he could find some pants, but he didn't end up finding any pants.

There was a couple of security guards eyeballin the caricature stand like, wouldn't it be funny if we got one of those some day. They looked like they had good sense of humors so I just started drawin them from where I was. The likeness and cartooniness came out pretty strong, so I was happy with it and they were just lovin it and laughin it up, so I was extra happy.

This is a girl named Sunny who works out here. Part of her job is to help out the foreign visitors with difficulties they might face. She has a real fun face to draw. I chunked her up a little, but most Koreans are super skinny, so if I am comparing her to other Koreans than maybe the chunkage was the right decision.

This is a drawing of Kevin Jackson. He's not in Korea, but he's one of the people I had to draw as a short silly little deal I made on Facebook. I said, anybody that clicks like on this comment before such-and-such deadline, gets a free caricature, and I got three clicks. Kev was one of them, so this is what I drew. He was the face I had the most difficulty with because I've drawn him many times and also I've seen a lot of great drawings of him. For my two favorites, click here and also here. I don't know. Yonie says, out here it's cool for the guy to hold the lady's purse. Maybe this is true. Maybe that's just how she gets sorry saps like me and Ty to lug it around like a couple o dasies, but where I come from, the guy don't carry the purse. Not for more than a brief second. We carry a wallet, and we got pockets...that are mostly empty, I might add. We say, ok woman, you can carry a whole bunch of extra stuff, but you're the one that's gonna schlep it around. I'm not a mean guy. I got big fat empty pockets. You can cram as much in there as you can fit, but I carry no purse. This is the American mentality.

I guess we're going in reverse chronological order. I think I did this the first night I arrived in Korea. Or it may have been the following morning or something.

One photo I got from my Findlay Library gig which went by pretty alright, I have to say.

I was really happy of this one I did of my dad. He's holding a squirrel because he and I found a baby squirrel that we took care of for a while. I thought it was weird and funny when he picked up this baby squirrel because I remember hearing a lot while growing up that it is a bad idea to even approach a squirrel because they might have rabies, but he picked it right up and it was a very good and loving and fragile squirrel. He had lost his mother and was very weak and vulnerable there on the sidewalk. We cared for him and fed him and gave him water and then took him to my sister's house, and her husband, the next day, took the squirrel to a wildlife rehabilitation professional. All's well that ends well.

Coffee Amici's the best! This gentlemen here has had me draw him a total of...I think four times, to my recollection.

Back to La Jolla

Me and Aida haven't went out to La Jolla in a while, but we went out today. It's always fun going out and painting there, because the beauty of it always strikes me, and I want to make it translate to paper. It's that simple in my head. I get pleasure from trying to mix up the right color. Not knowing exactly what two colors will look like beside each other keeps it interesting. I did the above painting in an hour and I'm not overwhelmingly happy with it, but I like how the lighting feels like what I saw. I cut corners by not staggering the sand or establishing the texture of the sand or adjusting the awkwardness between the wave and the rocks.
This lil sketch was painted after the first one when the sun had gotten so low I could hardly see. I wanted to try and capture the darkness that had struck and I only gave myself a half hour and the sun only gave me fifteen minutes.

This is Nate Kap's wall from the 2010 ISCA Caricature Convention. This year he took home 1st place for the categories "Best Exaggerated Style," and "Best Abstract Design." I think this is an unusual thing to happen. I'm not sure if it's the first time that the same artist took home both of these awards, but I bet it might be. I think his winning the abstract design category might possibly have something to do with a sort of stink that went down on Caricaturama 3000, which is a weekly competition on Facebook. All I remember of it is a few people saying, "I don't like abstract caricatures!!!" with much banging fist and broken English, and a few other people saying, "ARRRRGGG You don't understand!!" I do know that many from the ISCA crowd are among those who frequent the Caricaturama 3000 showdown, and I wager all this hooting about abstract versus...um not abstract solidified Nate's standing as an abstract caricaturist in the minds of many...or several...or at least enough to give him the most votes in this category.

But I might be wrong. But then I might be right. I have this general sort of feeling that when a lot of people think about abstract caricature or picture such a thing, it looks a bit like a Picasso: flat and geometric. Abstract caricature can have some depth to it, though. Would anybody say Turcios's caricature's aren't abstract. I don't think there can be a hard, fast rule as to what a caricature must have or not have to be classified as abstract , and this is because, technically, all caricature's are abstract.

The word "abstract" means existing as an idea, but not existing in reality. A painting of a face is one artist's idea of what that face looks like. It's not the actual face. The actual face is the actual face, actually. The face exists in reality, but the painting represents it. Sure the painting exists in reality also, but as an object: paint arranged on a board. Every pa

inting on board can be classified as paint on a board, but if we wish to talk about and classify what the artist is representing, we must acknowledge that this representation is an idea and not reality itself and thus abstract.

And so I will, now, tell you that abstract painting is called abstract painting because it embraces the fact that any kind of representation is abstract and seeks to use it's existence as an idea as an opportunity for creativity rather than a limitation. I think the mentality is something like, "Why should I paint a duck? A duck already exists. My painting will never be as real as an actual duck. Why don't I paint something nobody's seen before...like some lines and squares and stuff." And that's where Modern Art comes from junior. Even if you don't like it or think you don't like it, the idea behind it still makes sense. Why not take advantage of the medium you are working in rather than allow yourself to be so limited by the fact that what you have is a palette of paint and what you want is a duck.

When a caricature is called abstract it's when it embraces it's goals and limitations. It's goals are to show you what is funny about a given face. And it's limitations? Well, I would have to say they lie only within the mind and ability of the artist.

This drawing happened really fast cuz me and Aida were parked in a 15 minute zone. Aida was with me for a while as I was drawing, and I heard her talking over my shoulder. Then, she said she was going to the car, and I said "ok, I'll see you there in a second." I heard her walk away, and assuming it was only me and the ocean breeze out there, I broke wind very loudly and continued. When I finally figured I was done drawing, I hopped up and saw a man who was standing behind me watching me draw. I gave him a friendly "hey," and ran to catch up with Aida.

Robert, here, knows a lot about nutrition and we always talk about what we ate for breakfast, and one of his favorite things is called Laughing Cow Cheese, so I drew him with a laughing cow, and I made Robert extra skinny because he has lost a lot of weight through paying more attention to calories and stuff like that.

These are just a few more drawings from public events and street fair sort of stuff. Its way easier to do it like this than you could ever have dreamed. You just show up where there're lots of people. Bring some chairs and at least one big ol' sign that says "FREE CARICATURES! (donations appreciated)" and its a quick 60 bux or so in a few hours. Give it a shot some time. It's best to go with a friend or two, cuz that way you got somebody to talk to in between customers to keep your spirits up.
